When I started travelling, I spent a lot of time googling the answers to question plus size travelers often ask and compiling resources so I could make good travel decisions.

I thought it would be helpful to share this list with the world, so here it is. Happy traveling, babes.

AIR TRAVEL RESOURCES

Many plus size travelers face airline anxiety, but it’s possible to fly on airlines as a person of size… it just requires a litle research. I’m going to write about this at length, but until I do, here are a few short articles about how airlines’ Person of Size policies, as well as some rad resources that will help you assess inclusivity.

  • Will You Need To Buy An Extra Seat? Good overview of Customer of Size policies for US airlines from Smarter Travel
  • The Incredible Shrinking Airline Seat Information about seat width and pitch of US airline planes (See the chart included in the article.)
  • Airline Travel Tips for People of Size Short, helpful manual from the Association for Airline Passenger’s Rights
  • Airline-by-Airline Guide To Seatbelt Length Helpful info from TravelSavvy. (As always, seatbelt lengths will vary, since broken seatbelts are mostly fixed by being cut to a shorter length.)
  • SeatGuru This site can help you look at the details for your specific flight and provides helpful info about seat width, and where the best seats on the plane are. If you want an overview of seat pitch and width, they have a compare tool too!
  • Airline Seatbelt Extender Purchase Link Technically, people of size are supposed to ask obtain belts from flight attendants, so whether or not you carry one is a personal choice. If you get your own, purchase the right type for your aircraft and be aware that using an extender might mean you can’t sit in exit rows.
  • Packing Tips For Plus Size Babes The first article of many articles I’m planning to write about plus size travel!

TRAVEL AGENCIES

  • Abundant Travel This agency specializes in tropical vacations for people of size. I have not used them, but I’ve seen them recommended.
  • WHOA Plus WHOA Travel is a boutique travel agency that offers plus-sized travel tours in addition to their regular tours.
  • From Annette With Love is now offering trips & group activities for fat travelers!

THEME PARK INCLUSIVITY RESOURCES

SOCIAL COMMUNITIES FOR PLUS SIZE TRAVELERS

If you’d like join a plus-size travel community, here are a few I find really helpful:

  • Fat Girls Traveling (Facebook group for everything plus-sized travel)
  • Fat Girls Packing (excellent Facebook subgroup of FGT for travel shopping, planning and packing discussion)
  • Flying While Fat (Facebook’s go-to resource for Plus Size Air Travel)
  • Disney Parks for Plus Sized Guests (Facebook group for the Mouseketeers and Disneybounders in the house!)
  • Fit Fatties (this is not a travel group specifically, but travel adventures come up fairly often, and it’s a wonderful, supportive community for active plus size people)
  • Fat Girls Hiking is a community for… you guessed it… fat girls who hike!
  • AllGo An app for plus-size people to rate the comfort and inclusivity of a venue, restaurant or destination. This app is in BETA, and is not available everywhere, but you can volunteer an provide information about inclusivity in your area if you want!

  • Your Fat Friend  This online column covers a wide variety of body-related topics thoroughly, compassionately and clearly.
  • Inside the Body Neutrality Movement (Bust) Tired of being expected to feel GOOD about your body every single moment? Read up on body neutrality… it might work for you.
  • Health At Any Size Overview HAES is a health philosophy that promotes a holistic definition of health in which BMI, size and body weight are not treated as the primary (or only!) indicators of an individual’s health.
  • NOLOSE is an organization that seeks to end the oppression of fat people.
